1942: New World Order

Check out this freaky map. It's a 1942-edition, American take on how the world should be re-ordered once the fighting had stopped. Oh, how wrong art thee, let me count the ways.

1) Boy, for winners the Brits get screwed. Though they do get most of the Dutch East Indies. Oh, they get to keep the South Sandwich Islands, too.

2) The Dardanelles, Iran(!), and all of Germany(!!) go to the USSR.

3) It's kind of hard to read, but I believe that reads "Quarantined Japan" and "Quarantined Germany" and there's mention of a "Population Control Policy" in each. That sounds terrific.

4) The "Union of African Republics" includes South Africa. 1940s South Africa. Ah haha haha haha ha! I think I just wet myself.

5) Palestine has apparently been renamed, ahem, "Hebrewland".

The legend down at the bottom has some really interesting stuff too, including minor plans for things like mass deportations of Germans, Italians, and Japanese, the nationalization of all natural resources and banks, and the establishment of a world-wide currency. Whee!

A quick google doesn't turn up much about its author, Maurice Gomberg, besides re-hashes of what it says on his map.

Screw all that, what's this "United States of America" thing scrawled all over Canada and Greenland and Iceland?! Not to mention the "United States of South America"!

Excepting Brazil, the United States of South America is one of the more sensical things on this map.

So, going crosseyed here trying to read writing two or three pixels in height (you're going to tell me it's written out more clearly somewhere else now!)... some of the text is er, interesting.

30. The criminal perpetrators and their partners in guilt of this hideous war shall be brought to justice and unforgettable punishment administered.

31. All subjects of Japan and all persons of Japanese origin of doubtful loyalty shall be permanently expelled from the entire Western Hemisphere, USA Protectorates, and strategic island outposts and their property confiscated for post-war reconstruction needs.

32. All subjects of Germany and Italy and all persons of German and Italian origin known as active supporters of nazi and fascist ideologies shall be treated similarly.

33. German, Italian, and Japanese immigration to the Western Hemisphere, its protectorates, and island outposts shall be indefinitely stopped.

34. All persons of German origin in East Prussia and the Rhineland shall be transferred to inner Germany and the regions permanently de-[Prussified?? looks like it starts with Pr-]

35. All persons German, Italian, and Japanese origin shall be permanently expelled from their now conquered territories and their property confiscated for post-war reconstruction needs.

36. To cleanse the population of the defeated Axis aggressors of the intoxication of military chauvinism; to effectuate the removal and destruction of their potential military establishments; to recover the accumulated loot and to re-educate them for their eventual membership in the Family of Nations, the areas of Germany/Austria, Italy, and Japan shall be hermetically and indefinitely quarantined and administered by appointed Governers subject to supervision by the World League of Nationalities.

37. All resources, industrial and labor capacity of the quarantined areas shall be employed for the post-war restoration and reconstruction needs.

38. To reform the numerical power of the aggressor nations, as a potential military advantage, a Population Control Policy shall be elaborated and applied in the quarantined areas.

Wow. And they thought the Treaty of Versailles had screwed them over? That's peanuts compared to this! ;)

you're going to tell me it's written out more clearly somewhere else now!

I'm not sure I believe it's genuine, to be honest.

Is it genuine?

In the lower right corner there is a stamp that says "Division of Maps, Mar 31 1942, Library of Congress". So I guess one way to be 100% positive would be to go and find it in the Library of Congress. Anybody live close?

1942 Map

Remember the map is 1942, at the height of the war. It looks more than anything like Axis war propaganda.... notice how the Axis alliance countries (Germany, Italy, Japan) are all painted as abused victims, while Roosevelt's policies are mocked and grossly misrepresented.
Maybe with some help from the Nazi-funded German-American Bund.
It was Hitler who sought the 'New World Order'.
Many elements of the map make no sense....
Americans turning over Germany to the Russians? Not likely.
Israel and Jordan as 'Hebrewland' sound like a parody.
The map paints the USA as the dominator of the Western Hemisphere, seeking to annex Canada... precisely what the Nazi propaganda claimed, playing on fears of American domination in the Western Hemisphere. And note that it's the Nazis who ended up with so much post-war covert control of Argentina-Paraguay-Brazil-Bolivia and the cocaine trafficking.
The map appears to be making a mockery of American policy of 1942, and full of contradictions.
I vote for it being a Nazi propaganda sheet.

Re: 1942 Map

First find out who the authors of that map were ...their etnicity...before you come to your "conclusions".
I wonder which etnic group might use name: "Gomberg"

Re: 1942 Map

Any ethnic group at all, of course: who said it wasn't an alias?

One of the commenters below has suggested that the real author was a family acquaintance, the Italian fascist Piero Polazzalo. That fits in well with the theory it's Axis propaganda.

How did you come across it?

If you type "world" into Google image search, it comes up third. Believe it or not.

The one that me laugh was this one:

4. For reasons of history, economic structure, favorable geography and the welfare of mankind, the U.S.A. must, altruistically, assume the leadership of the newly established, democratic world order.

How many tyrants started out to ",altruistically, assume the leadership of the newly established, democratic world order."?

It would be ironic if this Gomberg person turned out to be a direct intellectual ancestor of our current neoconservatives. He has the same sort of un-ironic assumption of absolute American moral superiority.

Of course, that wasn't an uncommon attitude back in the early 1940s, and I imagine Pearl Harbor encouraged it, just as 9/11 did in our day.

Based on some hints in the map and its legend, I suspect the author was an American Communist, in the perplexing months following Operation Barbarossa. Pearl Harbour was just his excuse to propound American/Soviet co-dominion.

That's a stab in the dark, though.

It did look to me like a "proto-New American Century"... I'm amused by the way the author takes things like Europe, South America, India, China, and Arabia and says "these will all be lumped into their own 'united states of...'", as if they're just going to roll over and unify just because the US says so.

I think that's echoed today in the mess the US has made in Iraq and Afghanistan and the Middle East by their foreign policy, where they just thought they'd be welcomed with open arms and everyone would unquestioningly agree with their imposed changes or their vision for the world. Really I think it boils down to a combination of naivety, stupidity, ignorance, and arrogance that has been there since WWII - particularly among the right-wing in the US - but either way the fact is that the rest of the world do not like being told what to do or what/how to think, and it's particularly hard to claim any kind of moral high ground when the US government and its soldiers and citizens continue to do things that demonstrate that they're just as bad (if not worse in some cases) as those they're trying to be superior to.

I'd hope that in 60 years time people would be looking back at the US neoconservatives and their New American Century and laughing at how stupid they were, just as we're laughing at how stupid this map is now.

I rather doubt that in a couple of generations, anyone will be laughing. Tragedy is generally not funny.

Bad cartography, but it was usually bad in those days. Reminds me a bit of the 1930's Eurafrica maps.

You should dig up some of the American-published "Facts in Review"-maps from the German Library of Information in 1939 to 1941 if you like this sort of stuff.

I see we have an "United States of Scandinavia" (Yeah, because we'd really use "state", idi...) but apparently we've given Iceland and Greenland to the Amros and half of Finnmark to the Soviets, and possibly also the Faeroes to the Brits.

mr gomberg was in fact a friend of mines grandfathers alias as a writer and his real name is was piero polazzalo and was an italian fascist party member, piero passed away only 3 years ago and many of his propaghanda artworks still exist today amazing stuff. hope that helps , i was surprised to find this on here !

Thanks for the info!

So what did the Italians do to get up there with thte Germans and Japanese?

Re: Huh?

They were part of the Axis too, and still undefeated at the time the map was drawn. Their comic-opera reputation was maybe a bit too subtle for a lot of people at the time.
